U.S. Sugar Corp. officials lashed out at the Sierra Club Monday, saying the environmental group’s accusations that sugarcane farmers are to blame for  harmful Lake Okeechobee discharges into the Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie rivers are false.

The Sierra Club contends that if the state acquired 153,000 acres of U.S. Sugar-owned land south of Lake Okeechobee, discharges from the lake into the rivers would not be needed.
