Charleston, WV – “That is basically killing the coal industry in West Virginia,” Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R) West Virginia, told 13 News.
The fight is on in the U.S. Senator over what’s known as the Clean Power Plan. That’s the federal legislation that says every state must reduce harmful carbon emissions, and clean the air. But critics are trying to put on the brakes, saying the rules are too strict and will do further damage to the already troubled coal industry
“You know just this week we found out about another 200 coal miners who won’t have a job by Christmas. If this plan goes forward, the devastation that we see now will just be a shadow of what we see in the future,” Senator Capito said.
West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin is joining his Republican counterpart, Senator Capito, in opposing the Clean Power Plan.
“The jobs in the coal industry are not coming back, whether we pass the Clean power Plan, or not,” said Bill Price of the Sierra Club.
